Sew Saturday ~ Old School

Last February I had a very unique experience that I thought I have been wanting to share with you.  For some reason I am fascinated by old sewing machines.  They are beautiful to me.  While attending a local quilt show I had the opportunity to try a pedal operated sewing machine.  The experience was amazing.  It made me feel connected to the generations that had gone before me.

Here I am sewing my first block on a sewing machine that came across the country in a wagon.  I felt like I was on Little House on the Prairie.

They had several old sewing machines on display for this quilt show.

Someday I would love to have old sewing machines on display in my sewing room.  It's my way of combining my love for the past with the modern quilting I have come do adore.

The little 4 patch in the center was the block I sewed on the manual foot pedal machine.  Isn't that cool?  I need to come up with something to do with it, but for now it is on my design wall as inspiration.

I have a hand crank, but I REALLY want a treadle. I wish I could have had my mother's, but that wasn't possible, so now I'd just like to have any one that works well, and looks half way nice. There is a whole group of people, called Treadle On! I think, which sew on hand cranks and treadles. They have a yearly conference in most states. I know Tennessee has one every summer.

I agree with your love of old machines, I have my husband's Grandmother's machine in the basement. My father-in-law and his brother worked at the Singer Sewing Machine factory in the 1930's and got machines for several of the ladies in the family. When hand sewing, I always use my Great-grandmother's thimble, I love the connection!
